The horror genre is one full of copycat films that bring very little of interest to the table, so when a movie promises talking animals that instruct Ryan Reynolds to kill people, well, let’s just say our ears perk up with interest.

Released into limited theaters and onto VOD outlets today, Marjane Satrapi’s The Voices (review) is the film in question, and if you click that little link, you’ll see that our own Staci Layne Wilson called it a quirky horror-comedy that delivers the entertaining goods.

Reynolds stars as Jerry Hickfang, a lovable but disturbed factory worker who yearns for attention from a woman in accounting. When their relationship takes a sudden, murderous turn, Jerry’s evil talking cat and benevolent talking dog lead him down a fantastical path where he ultimately finds salvation.

The genre-bending psychological thriller also stars Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick, and Jacki Weaver.
