Rumor: Has James Gunn Found the DCU's Batman?

While Robert Pattinson is still set to return as the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, a new rumor suggests James Gunn may have quietly found the DC Universe’s own Batman.

According to film pundit John Campea, the role has reportedly already been cast, though he stopped short of naming the actor until he’s more confident in the information. Shortly afterward, online speculation quickly centered on Tom Brittney, with multiple scoopers claiming the British actor is the mystery choice. It’s important to note that neither DC Studios nor Warner Bros. has officially confirmed the casting.

Tom Brittney is best known for leading the long-running series Grantchester, though audiences may also recognize him from roles in Greyhound, Back in Action, and Outlander. Before David Corenswet ultimately suited up as Superman, Brittney was reportedly among the actors being considered for the iconic role.

If the rumor proves true, Brittney would become the DCU’s Batman for The Brave and the Bold, the upcoming film inspired by Grant Morrison’s acclaimed comic run. Unlike Reeves’ standalone Gotham universe, The Brave and the Bold will introduce an established Batman alongside his son, Damian Wayne, the latest Robin.

The Brave and the Bold is set to be directed by Andy Muschietti, the filmmaker behind Mama, It, It Chapter Two, and The Flash.

I exclusively reported back in January that the screenplay was finished and the film was targeting a 2028 release.

Fans are already speculating that the new Batman could make a surprise appearance in next summer’s Superman follow-up, though that’s purely speculation at this point.

For now, treat this one strictly as a rumor until DC Studios makes it official.
