North Road Sinking Into Horror Series ‘Sunken Meadow’

Kane Parsons Teases Possible 'Backrooms' Sequel and Limited Series

If the title “Sunken Meadow” sounds a little Backrooms-y to you, well, that may not be a coincidence. Deadline reports that North Road Television Studios, a company that co-financed Kane Parsons’ Backrooms with A24 (pictured above), has landed the hot new pilot, perhaps seeing something in it that reminded the studio of the liminal horror film hitting theaters this weekend.

The project hails from writer Mac Smullen, who the outlet notes sold the pilot in the seven-figure range. Yowza. Apparently, the script had quite a few studios buzzing, and North Road won out.

No word yet on plot details, but the project is described as an “elevated horror series that is rooted in a dynamic family drama.”

Executive producing are North Road’s Amy Israel, Josh Stern, and Peter Chernin.

This is the second time I’ve seen something described as “elevated horror” this afternoon. While I don’t love hearing that term (it’s obnoxious), the fact that Smullen sold the project for that figure without any talent attached, well, I can’t help but be intrigued. Nonsensical “elevated horror” terminology or not.

In the meantime, don’t miss Backrooms, in theaters as of tonight.
