‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ – Lin Shaye Talks Cyrus, Franchise’s Terrifying New Demon!

The Insidious franchise is heading deeper into The Further this summer, and with it comes a terrifying new central villain: Cyrus.
While the first trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further is packed with callbacks to earlier entries – including familiar red-faced demons and shadowy spirits haunting the astral realm – the new sequel appears to be building toward something larger. Directed by Jacob Chase (Come Play), the sixth installment in the long-running supernatural horror saga introduces Cyrus as a fresh evil unlike anything the franchise has faced before.
According to franchise veteran Lin Shaye, who returns once again as psychic Elise Rainier, Cyrus immediately stood apart from previous Insidious entities because of his unsettling personality and presence. The demon is portrayed by Sam Spruell, and Shaye admitted the actor gave her an instinctive reaction the moment they met.
“[He] was truly scary,” Shaye told EW. “When I met him on the street, I had a visceral response.”
What makes Cyrus especially different from past Insidious villains, however, is his charisma. Cyrus reportedly embraces a more manipulative energy.
“He’s funny,” Shaye explained, describing the demon’s dark sense of humor as “very disarming.” She went on to compare Cyrus to Dracula, emphasizing the character’s larger-than-life aura. “There’s a grandness to him. It’s sort of like Dracula,” she said. “It feels very otherworldly, bigger than life, but very rooted in reality.”
In Insidious: Out of the Further, Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe.
Longtime fans have already noticed that the trailer appears to revisit several iconic demons from earlier Insidious films, leading many to compare the sequel’s scale to an “Avengers-style” crossover for the franchise’s supernatural mythology.
Insidious: Out of the Further arrives in theaters on August 21, 2026.
