The #1 Most-Watched Netflix Horror Movie Stars Alicia Silverstone Versus Deadly Sharks

Shark horror is one of those subgenres that never really loses its bite. Decades after Jaws reshaped audience fears, filmmakers are still finding ways to make open water feel like a death sentence. From the stripped-down survival dread of The Reef to the claustrophobic panic of 47 Meters Down, sharks remain one of horror’s most reliable engines for tension. Netflix knows that well, with their big recent genre release, Thrash, making waves this month.

That staying power is on full display right now, with The Requin surging as the #1 most-watched horror movie on Netflix today. It’s a reminder that even a modest sharksploitation entry can find a second life when audiences are in the mood for something lean, tense, and easy to throw on.

Directed by Le-Van Kiet, the film stars Alicia Silverstone as Jaelyn, who travels with her husband Kyle (James Tupper) to a remote beachfront villa in Vietnam for what’s meant to be a romantic escape. The setup is familiar, but effective: isolation, beauty, and just enough distance from civilization to make things go very wrong.

And they do. A violent storm demolishes the villa, leaving the couple stranded at sea on little more than wreckage. With Kyle seriously injured, Jaelyn is forced into survival mode as great white sharks begin circling. What follows is a stripped-down battle of endurance, with the film leaning heavily into that “paradise turned nightmare” dynamic.

Originally released by Saban Films in select theaters and on VOD on January 28, 2022, The Requin didn’t exactly make a major splash on arrival. But its current streaming resurgence shows there’s still a strong appetite for no-frills survival horror, especially when it involves something circling just beneath the surface.
