‘Weapons’ Is So Scary, Spielberg Says He Doesn’t Need to Make His Own Horror Movie

Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan) of Weapons just received the highest compliment possible by one of the world’s most renowned filmmakers, Steven Spielberg (Jaws).
In an interview with Empire, the director was asked about the current state of horror. “I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch”.
I would hardcore disagree with Mr. Spielberg on the notion that he hasn’t directed any horror films. Jaws is a horror film. Plain and simple.
Disagreement aside, what has satisfied that itch Spielberg refers to? “When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I need to scratch,” he said. “I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me want to make a horror film that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.”
While that’s a bummer that Steven seems to have less interest in making another horror film, I’m sure Weapons director Zach Cregger must be giddy. Spielberg is widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. To have him pay such a high compliment…well, it’s no wonder Weapons is officially an Academy Award-winning film. It’s just that good.
So good, in fact, that we’ll soon see Aunt Gladys again in the upcoming prequel, simply titled Gladys. Cregger and Zach Shields are writing the script.
Before then, Cregger has his take on Resident Evil on the way, while Spielberg’s Disclosure Day arrives in theaters this June.
