Did Fede Álvarez Exit 'Alien: Romulus' Sequel Over Disagreement With Ridley Scott?

Alien: Romulus is getting a sequel, but director Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead) will not be returning.

Instead, A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski is being eyed to take the reins.

It sounds simple, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and reports online indicate Álvarez left over several disagreements with Alien creator and franchise producer Ridley Scott.

An exchange on Twitter spills the tea:

Feature First reported that Álvarez reportedly dropped out of directing because the lead actor in his pitch, David Jonsson, did not want to reprise his role.

ViewerAnon, a very regular insider in the industry, added fuel to the flames by revealing that Álvarez and Scott were allegedly butting heads regularly, which led to Fede’s exit. An interesting tidbit is that Álvarez reportedly wanted to bring Michael Fassbender back as David, and Ridley Scott shut him down “pretty hard”.

Originally created by filmmaker Ridley Scott and writers Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the 1979 Alien remains one of the scariest horror films ever made. It’s a universe that continues to draw attention, with the series “Alien: Earth” arriving on Hulu last year (and renewed for a second season).

As for Alien: Romulus, the seventh film in the franchise was one of 2024’s highest grossing horror films. You just can’t keep a good xenomorph down.

Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues wrote the script for Alien: Romulus 2.

Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are expected to reprise their roles.
