The Thing is an indisputable sci-fi horror masterpiece. I think that’s something most of us could agree on. Apparently, legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) feels the same. Fangoria has released a new clip today from the upcoming documentary The Thing Expanded, featuring del Toro signing the praises of a thing we just can’t get enough of.

John Carpenter, he risked and in many ways, lost a lot”, says del Toro in the clip. “It attained the highest honor I’ve seen a horror movie attain, which is the audience first rejects it. Because it’s breaking every boundary.

Adds del Toro, “One of the few times in my lifetime….where you know you’re in front of a classic. You believe you’re watching the Gone with the Wind of brutality.”

Had I been there in 1982 to see The Thing on the big screen, I know I would’ve felt the same.

Directed by Ian Nathan and on its way from CREATORVC (the team behind In Search of Darkness), The Thing Expanded will feature “five hours of new insights, stories, and revelations into John Carpenter‘s Classic”.

Each living member of the cast will appear, including Kurt Russell, Keith DavidThomas G. WaitesDavid ClennonJoel PolisRichard Masur and Peter Maloney. Alongside them are interviews with director John Carpenter, Dean Cundey (Director of Photography), Stuart Cohen (Co-producer), Todd C. Ramsay (Editor), and Larry Franco (Producer and 1st Assistant Director). And of course, filmmakers such as del Toro.

Robin Block, David Weiner and Josh Weiss produced.
