Sam Raimi’s ‘Send Help’ Claims Second Consecutive Box Office Win

Just let Sam Raimi be Sam Raimi.

After wasting so many of his golden years on crap like Oz the Great and Powerful and Doctor Strange, Raimi again returns to his roots with the thrilling Send Help (read our review), an incredibly fun and relatable genre film that is connecting with everyone.

In Raimi’s Send HelpRachel McAdams stars as an employee pushed too far who finally flips the script on her boss, played by Dylan O’Brien, after they crash land on a desert island.

After sneaking past Iron Lung (read our review) for a box office win last weekend, Send Help continues to dominate, claiming a second consecutive box officie victory with an estimated $10M for a $36.7M total.

Markiplier‘s video game adaptation Iron Lung continued to nip at Send Help‘s heels, raking in another $6.7M and is also nearing $35M.

Iron Lung follows a lone prisoner forced to pilot a rickety submarine through an ocean of blood on an alien moon, and the film came to be when YouTuber and filmmaker Mark Fischbach independently financed and produced the adaptation after securing the rights to the hit indie game Iron Lung by David Szymanski.

Another box office victory goes to Dracula, Luke Benson‘s take on Bram Stoker’s classic vampire tale that stars Caleb Landry Jones in the title role. The independent release through Vertical Entertainment bit into the box office, draining an impressive $4.5M over the weekend. That’s seriously impressive for both Vertical and an independent release.

Unfortunately for Lionsgate, audiences have grown tired of The Strangers and slayed the slasher trio. The third film in the trilogy, The Strangers: Chapter 3, only managed $3.5M this weekend, not enough to even place in the top 5. It’ll bleed out quickly, especially with Send Help and Iron Lung eating up all the box officie dollars, and Dracula draining even more.

(Editor’s note: Box office numbers are estimates and will be updated accordingly.)
