A24 Fires Up the Chainsaw: ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Series Coming [Exclusive]

A television series based on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is moving forward, with Strange Darling director and The Long Walk screenwriter JT Mollner set to lead the project.

The series is being developed with Glen Powell executive producing alongside Dan Cohen under the Barnstorm banner. They are joined by Roy Lee and Steven Schneider through Spooky Pictures, Stuart Manashil, Ben Ross of Image Nation, and Kim Henkel, who co-created the original 1974 film. Ian Henkel and Pat Cassidy will produce through Exurbia Films. Deadline originally reported the news.

The producing team is also developing a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre feature film separately, though Mollner is not attached to that project. The film remains in early development and has not yet been packaged, with its eventual distributor still undecided.

Mollner has emphasized that his focus is not on remaking the original film, which he considers untouchable, but on using the long-form television format to explore the world and mythology surrounding it in a way that respects its legacy while expanding the lore.

Powell echoed that sentiment, calling the original film a defining work of American horror and expressing excitement about helping usher the franchise into a new era with a creative-first approach.

Originally released in 1974, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre follows a group of young travelers who encounter a masked killer and his cannibalistic family in rural Texas, a film that has since become one of the most influential horror movies ever made.

A24 is also wrapping up a Friday the 13th TV series adaptation, Crystal Lake, set to land on Peacock this year.
