It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of actress Elyse Donalson today. She was 78.  Donalson, known for her roles in St. Elsewhere, The X-Files, and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, spent more than two decades appearing across small and large screens. Horror fans likely remember Donalson best for her role in the sixth Halloween film, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Donalson’s brief role, credited simply as “Lunatic” sees her encounter Paul Rudd’s Tommy Doyle in the sanitarium at the end of the film. There, she scares him before revealing she’s been stabbed by Michael, at which point one of two endings transpire (depending on which version you watch).

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is an entry we’re particularly fond of. In a retrospective several years ago, I wrote, “In its uncompromising weirdness, Joe Chappelle and writer Daniel Farrands got Michael back on track. For the first time since 1978, he really was the boogeyman again. That’s not a curse—it’s a genuine, Halloween blessing.”

Here at Dread Central, every Halloween player—big or small—is meaningful. Donalson will be missed.
