Director Teases a Surgically Enhanced 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' 4K Release!

It was a shock when Saw co-creator James Wan didn’t return to direct the sequel and instead opted to helm the Gothic horror Dead Silence. This was great news for a young Darren Lynn Bousman, who had his big break with Lionsgate’s Saw II, which led him to getting behind the camera for Saw III and Saw IV, as well.

He would piggyback Saw IV with his dream project, the ambitious horror rock opera, Repo! The Genetic Opera, which would assemble the most insane ensemble of talent from Paris Hilton to Sarah Brightman (Phantom of the Opera). It became somewhat of a cult phenomenon upon its 2008 release and started filling midnight screenings that could only be rivaled by The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

While Bousman eventually moved on to other projects – including the Saw spin-off, Spiral (2021), Repo! will always be a testament to the fact that dreams do come true.

Released in November of 2008, Repo! takes viewers to the mid-21st century, where an epidemic of organ failure leads to the rise of GeneCo., a company that provides transplants at a high price. Those who miss their payments become targets of GeneCo. mercenaries, who repossess the organs.

As we near the film’s 20th anniversary, Bousman has teased that he’s dusted off the original tapes and is currently working on a 4K UHD release for Lionsgate, which just released a 4K of Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever last week.

In the Instagram post below, Bousman also revealed that he has hundreds of hours of behind-the-scenes footage that they’re currently digitizing for future release.
