‘Absolute Batman’ Goes Full ‘Evil Dead’: Chainsaw-Armed Batman Faces Poison Ivy in Ark-M! [First Look]

Absolute Batman #17 Preview DC Comics

I’m actually obsessed with Absolute Batman. Like deadass serious. If you’re not reading it, you’re missing out.

It’s arguably the best reinterpretation of the source material in years, flipping the script on Bruce Wayne by reimagining him as a blue-collar construction worker. My hot take: it’s better than Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Yeah, I said it.

Each arc pushes him further and further into the depths of hell, or in this book’s case, Ark M, funded by a billionaire Joker. He found himself trapped there once, beaten daily by Bane, and barely escaped with his life.

This week’s Absolute Batman #16 concludes his two-issue storyline with Absolute Wonder Woman, but that’s just a palate cleanser for what’s next. Writer Scott Snyder has teased a return to Ark M – and if history tells us anything, it’s that Batman hasn’t even scratched the surface of what it means to be bruised and beaten.

Scarecrow is coming in Issue #19, but before that, Issue #17 brings us Absolute Poison Ivy, and that promised return to Ark M. Snyder shared today a teaser image that’s beyond shocking, and one that shows there’s a deeper connection to the new Bats mythology. Synder’s “everyman” Bruce Wayne is an homage to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead films and its own antihero: Ash.

The first image from Absolute Batman #17 shows Batman, rooted deep in Ark M, rocking dual chainsaw arms and ready to cut through some seriously nasty weeds (Ivy). Here’s how we know there’s a connection to Evil Dead (more notably Army of Darkness). Snyder captions: “Groovy.” Eff yeah.

Artist and co-creator Nick Dragotta takes a break, with Eric Canete providing the art in issue #17, due in stores February 18th. Each and every issue sells out, so make sure you pre-order at your local comic shop. Come find me and thank me.
