Deadline reports this morning that Léa Seydoux (Dune: Part Two, Crimes of the Future) has been cast to star alongside Academy Award winner Mikey Madison (Scream) in A24 and Picturestart’s adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, The Masque of the Red Death!

Described as a “revisionist and darkly comedic take”, the film follows a noblewoman whose exile leads her twin to assume her identity in a plague-sealed medieval kingdom. As she navigates deadly court intrigue with her daughter, she questions whether safety behind castle walls is worth the price of brutality.

Charlie Polinger will write and direct, hot off the premiere of his directorial debut, ironically titled The Plague (read our review here).

This is not the first time The Masque of the Red Death has been adapted. Roger Corman released a film version in 1964 starring Vincent Price. Part of the duo’s long-running series of Poe adaptations, it’s widely considered to be the best amongst them.
