A24’s Frighteneing ‘Undertone’ Poster Wants to be Heard

One of the hottest films releasing this year is the unnervingUndertone, which follows a podcast host taking care of her dying mother. We attended the film’s World Premiere at last July’s Fantasia Film Festival, where Mary Beth McAndrews wrote: “Thanks to incredible sound design and a stellar lead,Undertone is a deeply unsettling horror experience that treads familiar ground but still manages to surprise you.”
The film from Slaterverse Pictures and Black Fawn Films marks the feature film debut of writer/director Ian Tuason and stars Nina Kiri (The Handmaid’s Tale, Michèle Duquet (The Virgin Suicides), and Kris Holden-Ried (The Umbrella Academy). It’s been so well-regarded that Blumhouse has tapped Tuason to direct the next Paranormal Activity and has been in discussions for several other big projects.
A24 picked up the film following the festival hype and is bringing it to horror fans soon. While we wait for a release date and brand new trailer tomorrow, A24 shares the first official poster that wants to be heard.
“This film was born from the grief and love I carried for my mom in her final days,” explained Tuason. “I think what makes this movie powerful, beyond its elements of horror, is the deep and vulnerable place it came from,” added star Nina Kiri. “It takes a lot of courage to write something based on a painful and terrifying experience. Ian’s openness, combined with the entire crew’s receptivity, created not only an amazing experience for me, but also an important and compelling story.”
Undertone follows the host of an ‘all-things-creepy’ podcast who moves into her dying mother’s house to become her primary caregiver. When her podcast is sent 10 strange audio recordings of a young pregnant couple experiencing paranormal noises, she realizes the woman’s story mirrors her own as each new recording scratches at her sanity, drawing her into a fate she cannot escape.
