Has it really been well over half a decade since Warner Bros. began adapting Akira into a live action film? It has, proving that Hollywood often moves as slowly as Congress! But there’s some light at the end of that long tunnel…
Per Deadline, Dante Harper (the first Edge of Tomorrow scribe who recently did a draft on Vin Diesel vehicle The Last Witch Hunter) is currently working with Warner Bros., Appian Way, Mad Chance, and director Jaume Collet-Serra on Akira.
There’s nothing more than that to go on, but something is better than the nothing we’ve had since this past February, when Collet-Serra provided an update. And Harper seems like a good choice considering his experience adapting All You Need Is Kill, the manga by Hiroshi Sakurazaka that became Edge of Tomorrow, a film that this writer feels didn’t garner near the attention it deserved. (There’s always home video.)
We’ll keep you posted on updates, and with Comic-Con looming, it could well be sooner rather than later.
