‘Crystal Lake’ Creator Promises “Rivers of blood” In ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series

It has been well over ten years since we last saw an official entry in the Friday the 13th franchise. But that will soon change (sort of) when A24’s Crystal Lake prequel series arrives on Peacock next year. Time will tell exactly how it will all turn out, but one thing we now know for sure? The show is going to be very, very bloody.
While sitting down with EW recently, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane–also the co-showrunner of IT: Welcome to Derry–gave an exciting tease on what to expect from Crystal Lake. “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller. It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”
Rivers of blood. A paranoid ’70s thriller. Ingenious kill sequences. The Friday fan in me is ready to leap out of the water right now.

Originally released in 1980, Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th followed in the footsteps of John Carpenter’s Halloween. A film about a group of camp counselors stalked by an unknown killer, it followed the slasher formula that had been laid down, while delivering much more gore, sex, and drugs than what had come before. And, of course, Jason Voorhees, who would go on to become a horror icon.
Details about Crystal Lake remain largely unknown. What we do know is that the show will focus heavily on Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother, and the original killer from the first film. She’ll be played by Linda Cardellini, for whom Kane has some high praise. “She’s gonna shock and surprise a lot of people,” Kane told the outlet. “I think she’s gonna get a lot of attention for this role.
Crystal Lake also stars William Catlett (Abigail), Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, and Callum Vinson (Chucky).
