Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 may not have beaten the first film’s box office opening, but that hasn’t stopped director Emma Tammi’s sequel from breaking records. So far, the latest adaptation of the popular video games series has had the biggest opening for a post-Thanksgiving theatrical release, the biggest December horror opening, the biggest December opening for Universal Pictures and the 3rd biggest opening for a PG-13 horror film, to name a few. So, of course we’re already talking another sequel.

While sitting down with Coming Soon, FNAF star Matthew Lillard told the outlet, “Our hope is that we get to do three films. That’s always been the plan. Everything is dependent on how the movie does in theaters.

In the Five Nights at Freddy’s films, Lillard takes on the role of villain William Afton. He teased that if a third film does occur, it could feature an epic showdown between he and star Josh Hutcherson (who plays Mike). “Like Star Wars or Harry Potter, Voldemort or Darth Vader, they both sort of show up later in the series…We’ll get that final Harry Potter vs. Voldemort or Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader [in Five Nights at Freddy’s 3]. That’s our hope. Within that, we’ll get to do that and explore more. For now, we’ve got a long way to go; we’ve got to get people into the theaters.

Well, if the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 box office is anything to go by, we should probably expect an announcement for a third film any day now. And as someone who loves to watch the animatronics of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza wreak havoc, I’m all for it.

For now, you can catch Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in theaters from Universal Pictures.
