As the tendrils of AI wriggle their way deeper into the film industry, more and more filmmakers are speaking out. Add one of our favorites at Dread, Guillermo del Toro, as the latest to have some choice words for artificial intelligence.

According to Variety, while accepting the Vanguard Tribute for Frankenstein at Monday night’s Gotham Awards, del Toro spoke on the hot topic. “Fuck AI,” declared the beloved filmmaker.

Amen, Mr. Del Toro!

Added del Toro, “I’d like to tell the rest of our extraordinary cast and our crew that the artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans. The designers, builders, make-up, wardrobe team, cinematographers, composers, editors, this tribute belongs to all of them.

Guillermo del Toro has wanted to adapt Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein since he first read the book as a child. “I understood that back then, through her work and the first glimpse of Boris Karloff, that I did not belong in the world the way my parents, the way the world expected me to fit,” he said during the event. “That my place was in a faraway land inhabited only by monsters and misfits. They have been my kin ever since.

It’s difficult to ignore the irony of del Toro’s dream project coming to fruition at the same moment as AI. After all, Frankenstein centers around the consequences of playing God and creating a monster that cannot be controlled. We all understand the dangers of artificial intelligence and what it could mean for the future.

That especially goes for creatives like del Toro, who are seeing their work copied and stitched together by AI like some Frankenstein monster. I think (hope) we can all agree that we’d rather see art crafted by the hands of humans. With filmmakers like del Toro speaking up, hopefully that will continue to be the case.
