Not long ago, we learned that a reboot of the Sleepaway Camp series is in active development. Kenan Thompson’s production company AFA is behind the redux, and original writer/director Robert Hiltzik is on board to pen the script and helm the picture. Today brings a cryptic update suggesting that Felissa Rose, who famously played Angela in the 1983 original, may be involved in the upcoming reimagining.

Rose posted a picture of the title page of Hiltzik’s screenplay to Instagram with the caption, “That’s super cool to see! Sleepaway Camp 2025! Pretty thrilling, campers!”

The film follows cousins Angela (Rose) and Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten) as they embark on an unforgettable nightmare at Camp Arawak. What starts as a routine summer of fun turns into a vicious bloodbath with a shocking conclusion that few saw coming in advance.

While the Deadline article announcing the project didn’t specify plot details or anything about the cast, this latest development gives me good reason to think that Rose might be part of the reimagining in some capacity. If she’s looped in at this early stage, there’s a high probability that she’s attached. At the very least, I suspect she will feature in a cameo appearance.

The original remains controversial for its shocking ending after more than 40 years. The third act-reveal has been discussed at great length by film scholars, with many calling the picture out as problematic. It will be interesting to see how the reboot handles the subject matter. Will it go for an entirely different twist to update the setup for a more informed time? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Stay tuned to Dread Central for more updates on the Sleepaway Camp reboot as they materialize.
