Copyright law is in place to protect unauthorized use of an existing IP, but the caveat is that the protection only lasts 100 years. With the clock running out on a number of beloved characters from the early days of animation, we are seeing cherished properties falling into the public domain and allowing filmmakers to produce unauthorized iterations featuring said characters.

Writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield previously ruined countless childhoods when he positioned Winnie-the-Pooh as a homicidal maniac hell-bent on revenge in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. The success of that film led to similar takes on Mickey Mouse, Bambi, and Peter Pan. The latest character to get the horror treatment is none other than Betty Boop.

That’s right, director Jared Cohn and writer Josh Ridgway are teaming up to give Betty Boop a horror makeover. Deadline reports that the duo is taking their concept to AFI with VMI Worldwide representing the project.

The setup follows a team of horror podcast investigators who break into a theater haunted by the ghost of Betty Boop. What ensues is an all-out fight for their lives as they struggle to survive the night.

The production has tapped Devanny Pinn to play the titular character, with Katisha Shaw, Spencer Breslin, Eva Hamilton, and Colton Tran rounding out the core cast.

Jessica Russo, the COO of VMI, provided a statement to Deadline about the project, hinting that the character will have a tragic backstory. “Getting your classic cartoon told as a horror film is still mind-blowing, but what sets Boop apart from all the other horror IPs is her motivation,” Russo explained. “Boop’s dark history is extremely grim, but this telling allows her to get her power back. A true testament to feminism led by a predominantly female team.”

That’s all that we’ve got for you at present, dear reader. Stay tuned to the site for more breaking developments in the near future!
