Dread Central is excited to exclusively announced that Tenebrous Press will be releasing Annex of the Obscure, a multi-volume exploration of Horror across history and cultures by renowned horror writer, lecturer, and producer Mo Moshaty. Moshaty is known for her extensive research and work in horror academia. Now, with Annex of the Obscure, she brings her unique insights and deep cultural understanding to bear on the terrors present within the global cinematic, literary, and folklore spheres.

Annex of the Obscure is currently slated for five volumes, released yearly. Each volume will journey across themes, both familiar and new, through the lens of how we engage with them in popular culture. The first volume focuses on death and the afterlife. Future volumes include water and its surrounding folklore and horrors; haunted and abandoned places; and the animal world.

Moshaty, an award-winning filmmaker and key figure in the horror genre, has been recognized for her work with the Nyx Horror Collective and her role as Editor-In-Chief of NightTide Magazine. Her previous accolades include the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Short Film and numerous international lectures on women’s trauma in horror cinema. With the Annex of the Obscure project, she combines her horror expertise with her background as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and dedicated researcher.

Annex of the Obscure, Volume One: The Afterlife

The Afterlife examines the intricate tapestry of death practices and lore from some of the most obscure corners of the world, exploring how these ancient traditions have inspired legends, comics, films, and books, offering readers a comprehensive look at the intersection of cultural mythology and modern media. This volume promises to be an enlightening journey through the oft-overlooked narratives surrounding death and the afterlife, revealing how these themes continue to shape our understanding of mortality, and offering a nuanced perspective on how grief and death are processed through cultural lenses.

The foreword is written by Tuğçe Kutlu, Doctoral Candidate at Ankara University, whose research on grief in cinema explores how stories move us through mourning in ways both visible and hidden. Her work reveals the power of film not only to reflect sorrow but to accompany us through it, offering quiet moments of recognition, resilience, and healing.

Moshaty told Dread Central,

“In The Annex of the Obscure: The Afterlife with Tenebrous Press, I bring the lens I’ve sharpened as an international trauma lecturer and researcher to one truth none of us can escape: We are not getting out of this life alive.

My passion for global knowledge has led me through the rituals of grief, burial, and death across cultures, but writing this book also meant grappling with my own mortality, which felt more urgent as I age (rapidly and against my will). Horror has always been my vessel for exploring what most turned away from, and here that passion collides with lived experience and a deep curiosity about how we face the unknown.

Across the world, I’ve traced not only what we do with death, but why, as humans, we need to believe that there is something beyond it. This is both a personal confession and a guided journey through the corridors of the afterlife, written in the hopes that readers will find some resonance with its dread, its reverence, and its strange beauty.”

Annex of the Obscure is set to debut in 2026.
