This Action-Horror Spectacle Is Dominating Paramount+: “The ultimate blockbuster”

There’s something to be said for a horror film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I surely have an appetite for more artistic fare now and then, but I’m equally content with a campy romp that encourages viewers to turn off their brains and escape into a far-fetched scenario where style reigns supreme over substance.

Films of this variety don’t always receive a positive reception from critics. More often than not, they’re met with scathing reviews, lamenting the lack of artistic merit. Yet, these movies have their rightful place in the cinematic pantheon. Popcorn entertainment may not be high art, but the box office receipts prove that there’s an enthusiastic audience for outlandish setups that deliver mindless entertainment in an appealing package.

Trash movie enthusiasts like myself made the farcical romp Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters a smash hit at the box office, despite an icy reception from critics. Now, I’m pleased to report that the film is finding new life on the Paramount+ charts. Today, it lands as the fourth most-watched title on the streamer overall.

What is Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters about?

Fifteen years after Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) defeated the wicked witch who planned to have them for her dinner, the siblings have come of age as skilled bounty hunters. hell-bent on retribution, they have dedicated their lives to hunting down and destroying every witch still lurking in the dark forests of their homeland. As the notorious blood moon approaches, the siblings face a great evil — one that could hold the secret to their terrifying past.

Though it doesn’t deliver much subtext or tackle any of life’s great issues, this action-packed take on the classic fairy tale is still an intense ride that features expertly rendered special effects and a campy sense of humor. Moreover, it’s a pretty brilliant premise. Rather than a straightforward retelling of the fairy tale, writer/director Tommy Wirkola positions it as a sequel to the classic story we know and love.

The film quickly became a fan favorite upon release in 2013. Hansel & Gretel brought in $236 million globally during its theatrical bow and won over plenty of movie lovers in the process. Below, you can see a handful of fan reactions to this unforgettable effort.

This cheesy effort remains a fan-favorite amongst those who enjoy an action-packed spectacle. If you’re ready to get in on the fun, make your way over to Paramount+, where you can do precisely that!
