‘Wuthering Heights’ Trailer Is an Erotic Gothic Fever Dream From Emerald Fennell

There’s been a lot of discourse swirling around Emerald Fennell’s (Promising Young Woman, Saltburn) upcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Gothic classic Wuthering Heights. Ever since we saw those early shots of Margot Robbie in a suspiciously 21st-century-looking wedding dress online, the general reaction has basically been: Why is Fennell doing this to us?

After all, Wuthering Heights has been adapted countless times (I’m a fan of the 2011 version), so another trip across the moors felt a little unnecessary. But now that the official teaser has dropped, we’re finally getting a sense of Fennell’s vision, and it looks like one of those steamy bodice-rippers your mom read in the ’90s. The trailer features everything from fingers shoved in mouths, fish, and egg yolks to someone crawling across the floor à la Lily-Rose Depp in Nosferatu (2024).

I fear, as someone who’s been openly critical of Fennell’s past work, that I’m intrigued.

If you didn’t pay attention in English class, Brontë’s novel follows Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange. There, he uncovers the destructive, obsessive romance between the brooding Heathcliff and the doomed Catherine Earnshaw. Oh, and Catherine’s ghost haunts the grounds. Plus, Heathcliff might just dig up her body. Something to think about while you’re distracted by all the yearning in Fennell’s teaser.

Knowing Fennell wasn’t afraid to show Barry Keoghan doing unspeakable things to a grave in Saltburn, we might be in store for something deliciously disturbing. As Bill Hader said, “Mark me down as scared and horny.” I’m still not a fan of that wedding dress, though.

Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi, Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes and Ewan Mitchell. It’s set to open in theaters on Valentine’s Day 2026.
