‘Terrifier 4’ News: Director Says New Sequel Reveals Art the Clown’s Origins With “A lot of answers”

Terrifier is an indie horror franchise success story that continues to gain momentum with each successive series installment. Since our distribution Label DREAD released the first film in 2018, the franchise has continued to resonate with horror fans, captivating viewers with its gruesome depictions of viscera perpetrated at the hands of a deranged killer clown called Art. The enthusiastic response to the original has paved the way for two sequels to date, with a fourth and (reportedly) final installment on the horizon. Franchise creator Damien Leone is presently in preproduction on the project, but he found a few moments to speak with the fine folks at Collider about the much-anticipated fourth outing.
Leone is walking a fine line with this sequel. He wants to share some of Art’s backstory, but worries about giving too much away and losing some of the magic in the process. He explained to the outlet, “I love the mystique. That’s the most important part, even if people don’t realize it because they’re just so hungry to know what his deal is. I think a lot of people don’t realize the reason he works so well is because of the mystique. If you pull the curtain back too far, and you lose that mystique, it’s over.”

It may surprise some to learn that Leone names the late, great David Lynch as a major influence on the franchise. He says that he tried to adopt a Lynchian approach when he was writing the second film and hopes to tackle the fourth installment in a similar fashion. “I could never be on the same level as David Lynch,” Leone told Collider. “He’s one of my heroes. But I love the way he tells stories, and they’re very abstract. He doesn’t give you answers.”
From his comments in the interview, it sounds like Leone is well aware of the dangers of giving too much away. Even still, he promises that there will be “a lot of answers… maybe to a fault,” which suggests that he may be torn about what to reveal and what to leave opaque. Here’s hoping that the writer/director will strike the right balance and the film will resonate as effectively as the three previous installments have.
With the project currently in development, we’ll likely have answers sooner rather than later. Many are speculating that the film will bow at some point in 2026. However, we’ll just have to wait and see.
That’s all that we’ve got for you, for now. Be sure to stay tuned to the site for more timely updates as they break.
