Keanu Reeves fans know him best as an action icon. He’s John Wick, Neo, Johnny Utah. But as horror fans, we can also claim Reeves as one of the genre’s most welcome famous faces. He’s not immersed in it all the time, but whenever Reeves does horror, we pay attention.

Reeves and horror cinema go all the way back to the chilling (if horror-adjacent) River’s Edge in 1986. Since then, he’s appeared in genre staples like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and acclaimed films like Knock Knock. He also, very memorably, starred in a 1990s apocalyptic horror-drama film with Al Pacino that’s streaming for free right now.

In The Devil’s Advocate, Reeves plays Kevin Lomax, an ambitious and unscrupulous defense attorney. Kevin’s the kind of guy who wants to win no matter what, even if it means letting guilty men off the hook. That cutthroat attitude earns him the attention of John Milton (Pacino), head of a prestigious New York law firm.

Eager for the career boost, Kevin moves with his wife (Charlize Theron) to the Big Apple to work for Milton. But as the two men get to know each other, Kevin realizes that something isn’t quite right, and that Milton might be something more than human.

Yes, as the title suggests, this is a movie about Satan emerging as a managing partner in a New York law firm. And because Satan is played by Al Freaking Pacino, you can’t look away. He’s having so much fun chewing up scenery, but even beside Pacino, Reeves finds a way to shine. Kevin is not exactly a good person, but Reeves has that angelic face and sense of vulnerability. He makes you believe that you should be rooting for this guy, even as he goes down darker and darker paths.

Reeves’ performance, paired with Pacino’s, is more than enough to make The Devil’s Advocate worth watching. But there’s more. Director Taylor Hackford, while not known for horror, clearly knows his stuff. He drapes the film in operatic blacks and reds, playing up the Biblical horror of it all as The Devil’s Advocate reaches a crescendo. Like The Prophecy or Stigmata, it’s one of those essential pieces of 1990s religious horror. Plus, the way it slowly unfurls what feels like a violent Satanic curse gives it The Omen vibes. If you like your horror movies with Satan in them, it’s a must-see. Dread Central’s own Tyler Doupe’ called it “a phenomenal showcase that sees two talented thespians going head-to-head” in this appreciation from 2023.

Fortunately, The Devil’s Advocate is streaming free right now on Tubi, where it shot up to number one on the streaming charts earlier this month. Take advantage of the free watch while you can!
