Mike Flanagan Raves Over New Clint Eastwood Thriller on HBO Max: “They don’t often make them like this anymore”

Clint Eastwood is a shining example of a life well lived. The man is in his 90s, yet he continues to prove that he’s a force to be reckoned with. The actor and director has won four Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards over the course of his storied career. His diverse skill set has led to great success both in front of the camera and behind it.

The director has more than made his mark on Hollywood over the years, and he has amassed plenty of fans along the way. Among them is one Mike Flanagan. In scanning through Flanagan’s Letterboxd reviews, one in particular caught my eye. The Oculus director previously penned a critique of a recent Clint Eastwood release, and his take suggests that the film is well worth checking out.
The picture in question is Eastwood’s latest directorial effort, Juror #2, which just so happens to be available to stream on HBO Max.
What is Juror #2 about?
A juror for a high-profile murder trial (Nicholas Hoult) finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma that could influence the verdict and potentially convict or free the accused killer.

Flanagan’s write-up speaks to his personal connection to the film as someone who has chosen sobriety in recent years. Additionally, although he takes care to note that suspension of disbelief is required to get the most out of the picture, Flanagan ultimately reassures the reader that the compelling nature of the film makes setting the improbable setup aside a worthwhile endeavor.
The final paragraph of Flanagan’s Juror #2 review reads: “A fine, thoughtful drama for grownups, and the kind of film that used to be celebrated in the days of Sidney Lumet… they don’t often make them like this anymore.”
In case the Sidney Lumet reference doesn’t immediately ring a bell, the celebrated filmmaker sat at the helm of several noteworthy legal dramas, including 12 Angry Men, The Verdict, Prince of the City, and Night Falls on Manhattan. That makes Flanagan’s comparison a flattering one that speaks volumes about the efficacy of Juror #2.
As it turns out, that is just about all that we’ve got for you. Make sure to keep an eye out for more streaming recommendations in the near future. Until then, you can always look me up on Threads if you’re keen to keep tabs on my comings and goings. I am active on the platform as @FunWithHorror.
