World-renowned author Stephen King is well known for his prolific literary output as well as for his snarky sense of humor. He’s been known to troll divisive political figures and tech billionaires alike via social media, often leading to gut-busting results. With that said, King isn’t above poking a bit of good-natured fun at himself now and then.

In fact, the author recently responded to a Threads prompt asking, “What’s your favorite disaster movie?” with a self-deprecating two-word response that absolutely proves he is not above trolling himself on occasion.

King’s comical reply simply reads, “Maximum Overdrive.” As you may know, that’s the only film King ever directed. As you may also know, he’s not alone in considering the picture a bit of a mess. King has openly admitted that he was using copious amounts of cocaine when he made the film, which is likely one reason it’s so all over the place.

What is Maximum Overdrive about?

After a comet causes a radiation storm on Earth, machines come to life and turn against their makers. Holed up in a North Carolina truck stop, a group of survivors must fend for themselves against a mass of homicidal trucks. A diner cook, Bill Robinson (Emilio Estevez), emerges as the unlikely leader of the pack, attempting to find an escape plan for himself and the survivors, who include his boss, Bubba Hendershot (Pat Hingle), and a newlywed couple.

If you haven’t seen Maximum Overdrive and you’re wondering how big of a mess the flick really is, you can presently find it streaming on Tubi. If you go in with a very open mind and the understanding that it’s not high art, you might be able to have some fun with this misguided effort. Maximum Overdrive is definitely the type of picture that you can screen at a bad movie night with friends who appreciate a nonsensical diversion.

Who knows? You might even unironically enjoy it. The flick has a small, but dedicated base of fans who somehow see merit in the picture despite everything it gets wrong.

Well, there you have it. King understands that Maximum Overdrive is a cocaine-fueled misstep. But you don’t have to take his word for it. You can stream the flick on Tubi to see where you stand. Stay tuned to the site in the near future for more comical asides from your favorite creators in the genre space.
