Guillermo del Toro Says He Rewatches This Streaming David Fincher Movie at Least Twice a Year: “Perfection”

There’s something endlessly captivating about a feature film based on actual events. Sure, the narrative may be fictionalized to some extent, but there’s an undercurrent of truth permeating the ordeal. Just knowing that ups the ante and makes the viewing experience immersive and almost unsafe in cases where the proceedings are particularly well executed.

Monster is a stellar example of an unflinching film that lightly fictionalizes a series of harrowing and brutal real-life crimes in compelling fashion. Additionally, the 1967 film In Cold Blood stands as another celebrated effort that effectively recreates a tragic and shocking crime for the silver screen.

And that’s to say nothing of David Fincher’s Zodiac, a film that auteur creator Guillermo del Toro counts as a personal favorite.

He once took to social media to share his admiration for the picture, saying:

“Top 3 Fincher movies for me: #1 Zodiac, #2 Seven, #3 The Game. Perfection. I rewatch Zodiac at least twice a year.”

Zodiac

What is David Fincher’s Zodiac about?

In the late 1960s and 1970s, fear gripped the city of San Francisco as a serial killer called Zodiac stalked its residents. Investigators (Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards) and reporters (Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr.) become obsessed with learning the killer’s identity and bringing him to justice. Meanwhile, Zodiac claims victim after victim and taunts the authorities with cryptic messages, ciphers, and menacing phone calls.

I concur with the Pacific Rim director that the film has ample replay value. Speaking of that, if you’re due to pay a return visit to this chilling picture, you can currently find the flick streaming on Paramount+. If you have yet to take this one in, allow me to say that it is a truly immersive viewing experience that is likely to be every bit as unpredictable as narrative fiction for anyone who isn’t overly familiar with the case on which the film is based. And I’d be remiss not to mention the absolutely phenomenal performances by the talented core (and extended) cast.

So, there you have it, dear reader. Zodiac is a masterful adaptation of a harrowing true crime case for which celebrated filmmaker del Toro has nothing but love. Better yet, you can stream it on Paramount+ now! Be sure to stay tuned to the site in the very near future for more enticing recommendations from your favorite creators in the genre space.
