The Taking of Deborah Logan

I love seeing an openly gay creator succeed in Hollywood. Not long ago, that was nearly impossible. For way too long, you could be out and proud, or you could work in Hollywood, but it was rare to see anyone successfully do both. This was especially true for on-camera talent for many, many years. Thankfully, times are changing, and we are more prone to embracing our differences than demonizing them.

That’s why I love the cinematic output of filmmaker Adam Robitel. The talented director and screenwriter is openly gay and killing it. He was at the helm of the dynamite horror picture Escape Room, along with the franchise sequel Insidious: The Last Key. I’m always game to check out one of his pictures.

If you’re similarly prone to take in his work, perhaps you’ll be down to watch Robitel’s breakout found footage picture, The Taking of Deborah Logan. It’s presently streaming on Tubi, so what have you got to lose?

In case you’re unfamiliar with the setup, The Taking of Deborah Logan plays out like this:

Mia records the daily lives of Deborah and her daughter, Sarah, as part of her thesis. As the days progress, strange things happen around Deborah, and it becomes apparent that something has taken control of her.

We here at Dread Central are big fans of this flick. So much so that our own Joshua Anderson previously spoke to the film’s complex depictions of family trauma in his column, The Lone Queer. His coverage, of course, touches on LGBTQIA+ representation in the flick, and describes the picture as “a heartbreaking, relentless, and terrifying found footage film.”

Anderson is right on all of the above counts. With that said, I sat through a lot of this one while peering between my fingers because this chilling effort features an absolute abundance of snakes. I’m not a fan of anything that slithers, but the flick is compelling enough that I toughed it out. Hell, I might even pay it a return visit one of these days. That’s how good it is.

If you want to see what we’re talking about, make your way over to Tubi, where you can draw your own conclusions. You’ll also be supporting a talented queer filmmaker!

That just about concludes this broadcast. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more updates from the streaming scene in the very near future. Until then, you can always find me on Threads as @FunWithHorror.
