Prime Video’s #1 Movie Is a Shockingly Bad Remake of a Classic Thriller: “The worst movie I’ve ever seen”

Horror remakes get a bad name, thanks to films that cynically utilize a beloved IP to draw in viewers but fail to do justice to the property being adapted. The 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street took that approach, and fans are still understandably up in arms about it. Many had a similar reaction to Gus Van Sant’s Psycho.

Remakes have the potential to work well when the filmmakers behind the project have an appreciation for the property being rebooted, have something to say, and have a production budget appropriate for the story being told. A retelling of a beloved classic recently landed on Prime Video, and while it’s the #1 film on the platform, the viewer (and critical) reactions suggest none of the aforementioned prerequisites were met.

The flick in question is Rich Lee’s reimagining of the celebrated classic War of the Worlds. The property began life as a novel by H.G. Wells, found success as a radio play, and has since been adapted several times as a feature film.

What is the War of the Worlds remake about?

Department of Homeland Security officer Will Radford (Ice Cube) works for a government surveillance program that can monitor every person on Earth. While helping FBI agents try to find a mysterious hacker known as Disruptor, meteors begin striking all over the planet. Large machines emerge from these and start attacking humans. Will and a friend from NASA ascertain this to be an alien invasion.

While previous adaptations of this IP have garnered much critical acclaim, this latest effort appears to be a complete dud by all accounts. The flick is rendered in screenlife style, which seems like a questionable approach for adapting such a timeless tale. The tech featured within is going to be dated in no time, meaning that this reimagining will likely age poorly. Not to mention, a bit of cursory research seems to suggest the budget is nearly nonexistent.

In scouring social media, I wasn’t able to find a single viewer who had something nice to say about the flick. However, there were plenty of people weighing in with comical reactions. See what I mean below.

As you can probably tell from the reactions above, this looks to be a film that leaves a mark for all the wrong reasons. If you’re curious to see where War of the Worlds goes wrong, you can find the film streaming on Prime Video now!
