A Mind-Bending Slasher Film “With franchise potential” Is Currently Streaming on Prime Video

I love a good mash-up, a film that melds horror elements with another genre like Western or science fiction. The combination of different niches often makes the end result less predictable and allows the film to stand out from the crowd.
From Dusk Till Dawn is one of my favorite genre hybrids. The flick deftly melds action tropes alongside horror overtones, resulting in a winning effort with endless replay potential. Organ Trail is yet another solid example. The flick juxtaposes the Western genre alongside visceral horror fare, with crowd-pleasing results. Despite my appreciation for those flicks, we’re here to discuss an entirely different genre mash-up today. A film on Prime Video that blends horror, science fiction, comedy, and time travel tropes. Hooray!
If you haven’t already guessed, I’m talking about Nahnatchka Khan‘s Totally Killer.
Exactly what is Totally Killer about?
Thirty-five years after the shocking murders of three teens, an infamous killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. When 17-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) comes face-to-face with the masked maniac, she accidentally time-travels back to 1987. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar culture, Jamie teams up with her teenage mother (Olivia Holt) to take down the psycho once and for all.

Totally Killer caught my interest when it bowed on Prime Video in 2023. I critiqued the film for Dread Central, giving it a favorable review. I headlined my coverage by dubbing the flick “a film with franchise potential,” and I stand by that assessment. Totally Killer is fun, funny, silly, violent, and stands as a refreshing blend of genres.
If you need further convincing, the summation from my critique reads as follows:
“I had a really good time with Totally Killer. The film features a strong lead in Kiernan Shipka and great casting across the board. The character-driven narrative kept me invested, and the ‘80s nostalgia scratched a persistent itch. The killer makes for a memorable addition to the slasher pantheon and left me curious to see where a follow-up effort might take the action.”
If you’re sold on the film, you can find it streaming on Prime Video. In fact, Totally Killer is actually a Prime Video original, so it will likely hang around for the foreseeable future.
