Stephen King Praises Grotesque New Body Horror Movie Starring Dave Franco: “This one works”

Of all the horror sub-genres, I think body horror is easily the grossest. It gets under my skin (no pun intended) in a way that slasher fare or supernatural offerings simply cannot. I get less squeamish watching a character get sliced into tiny little pieces than I do witnessing someone pull off their fingernails or come down with a festering case of pulsating pustules.

Don’t get me wrong, I like body horror. Videodrome is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. With that said, however, I really have to brace myself before I watch films of this ilk. I think it’s because such fare forces us to confront the uncomfortable and tap into deep-seated fears about our perceived physical flaws and the way they inform our identity.

Body horror has been used as a jumping-off point to tell many great stories over the years. Most recently, writer/director Michael Shanks is using the subgenre to speak to themes like identity and codependency in intimate relationships via his latest film, Together. Thus far, this grotesque offering has been met with critical acclaim, and it even managed to catch Stephen King’s attention.

After watching the film, the author shared his thoughts on the picture via Bluesky, saying:

“Dave Franco and Alison Brie are great—and brave—in Together. Horror movies work when you care about the people. This one works.”

What is Together About?

Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie find themselves at a crossroads when they move to the countryside, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.

It’s nice to hear that the film features great characters. I’m not surprised, though. Dave Franco and Alison Brie are great performers. I agree with King’s sentiment that leads worth investing in go a long way toward making a horror picture effective. If his reaction to the film has piqued your curiosity, Together is out now exclusively in theaters.

Neon released the film on July 30, and it has since garnered favorable reviews from critics and performed well at the box office. In less than a week, this indie flick has pulled in over $10 million.

That’s all that we’ve got for you at present. Make sure to stay tuned to the site in the near future for more recommendations from your favorite creators in the horror space.
