Netflix Will Soon Lose the Absolute Best Horror Remake Ever; Don’t Miss Your Chance

The ‘00s were a happening time for horror remakes. That decade produced its fair share of forgettable efforts but more importantly yielded a number of quality reimaginings of beloved classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left, and several more. Though not all of the reboots from the era made their mark, a large number of them certainly did.

Most of the reimaginings of the ‘00s that successfully made their mark did so thanks in no small part to a screenplay that took inspiration from the original without trying to recreate the source material in its entirety. That approach allows the film in question to appeal to the uninducted without alienating fans of the IP on which it is based. It’s a delicate balance, but when done well, it’s something to behold.

No remake from the ‘00s walked that line better than Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead. Thanks to a killer screenplay by genre legend James Gunn and deft direction by Snyder, the film easily claims its place as the best horror remake of the ‘00s.

Dawn of the Dead

The setup for Dawn of the Dead goes like this:

When her husband is attacked by a zombified neighbor, Ana (Sarah Polley) manages to escape, only to realize her entire Milwaukee neighborhood has been overrun by the walking dead. After being questioned by cautious policeman Kenneth (Ving Rhames), Ana joins him and a small group that gravitates to the local shopping mall as a bastion of safety. Once they convince suspicious security guards that they are not contaminated, the group bands together to fight the undead hordes.

If you don’t believe my bold claim that the film stands as the best remake of the ‘00s, perhaps now is a good time to give the flick a rewatch to see exactly what I mean. You can experience this intense, fast-paced effort via Netflix but not for long. Dawn of the Dead leaves the platform on August 1st, meaning that your last chance to watch this one through the streamer is July 31st.

That’s all the streaming-related news I’ve got for you at this juncture. Make sure to stay tuned to the site for more exciting updates in the very near future. If you’d like to keep up with me in the interim, you can always find me on Threads. I am active there as @FunWithHorror.
