Werewolf movies are hard to get right. The creature design and transformation sequences are crucial to the success of these films, yet both are notoriously expensive to render. As such, there are a handful of classic lycanthrope pictures that we keep going back to, but few recent efforts seem to stand the test of time.

With that said, there are at least a handful of contemporary werewolf films that get more right than wrong. At least one such example seems to have flown largely under the radar thanks to a lackluster showing at the box office.

I’m talking about The Cursed. The film, which sometimes gets mistaken for Wes Craven’s Cursed, plays out like this: In 19th-century France, a man arrives in a remote country village to investigate an attack by a wild animal. However, he soon discovers a much deeper and sinister force that has the manor and the townspeople in its grip.

Netflix recently added The Cursed to their lineup, and it has since been trending in the top 10. Today, the flick sits as the most-watched horror film on the platform and claims the 7th place chart position overall.

When the picture played theaters, it underperformed, pulling in less than $5 million in total. That, however, is no indication of quality. Critics have been fairly kind to this one, and fans who have had the occasion to experience it have also reacted favorably. You can scope a sampling of social media reactions below to see what I mean.

As you can see above, people who have made the time for The Cursed are connecting with this Gothic tale of lycanthropy. If you are keen to see if the film resonates, make your way over to Netflix to draw your own conclusions.

If you still need more context on the nuts and bolts, we’ve got you covered.

The film comes from writer/director Sean Ellis (Anthropoid). Ellis bucked convention and shot the picture on 35 MM. Hooray for celluloid.

The flick enjoyed a world premiere at Sundance in 2021. It also played the Sitges Film Festival and garnered several award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

The film’s core cast features several recognizable faces, including Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, Alistair Petrie, Roxane Duran, and Áine Rose Daly.

That’s just about all that we’ve got for you at present, dear reader. Stay tuned to the site in the near future for more exciting updates from the streaming scene.
