EXCLUSIVE: ‘Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time’ Sketches Extend The Hellboy Universe

Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is teaming up with writer and artist Bruce Zick (The Mighty Thor, The Atomic Legion, Primordial) to explore an uncharted corner of the Hellboy Universe in Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time.
Read the full synopsis below:
On a dark night in 1880s England, the ever-adventurous Whittier family, along with Edward Grey, is attempting to send a man into the realm between reality and the Beyond to free the trapped spirit of a Whittier uncle. But his expedition into space—and time—will take him to places beyond even the Witchfinder’s knowledge. Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time follows an intrepid time-travelling explorer on a journey to a new dimension. He soon discovers that the monsters he encounters aren’t his only problem, as time itself might represent the ultimate danger.
Check out a few sketches from Zick below, which include some exclusive commentary from the artist about his process in crafting the look and feel of this new world.

“The first inked idea to see how it translates away from the pencil stage. In a different direction, this guy is mostly biological with a little bit of plating and nuts and bolts. I felt like I had just the right feel for the book with this fella, and with a little bit of changing, he might just be the star of the first book.”

“This is the first idea for what our ghostbuster and his outfit would look like. It’s a combo of a Victorian deep sea dive with some retro steampunk and scifi contraptions. Rather clumsy, crazy, and improbable, yet also a bit believable. We decided to go a different direction.”

“Another Graveyard denizen, much more mechanical than biologic. Looking for strange, asymmetrical shapes, trying very hard to think outside the box from what I usually do. I ended up really loving this guy. Maybe he/she should have a book of their own?”

“The story is populated with time travelers throughout history, and this is one of those hapless adventurers, here from the Victorian era. He was pretty good looking when he left, but after time without end in the Graveyard…not so good for him. I liked him a lot, and sadly, there is never enough space in a story to do justice to incidental characters.”

“The earliest exploration for various creatures living in the Graveyard of Time. Part biological and mechanical, with clock or time elements. Needs to be powerful, hulking, and fearsome, but also mysterious or magical looking. And…ugly!!”
Co-written by Mignola and Zick, with art by Zick, and letters from Clem Robins, this four-issue miniseries will feature covers by Zick with variant covers from Mike Mignola, Troy Nixey, Ben Stenbeck, and Michael Wm Kaluta.
Mike Mignola said in a previous statement, “This is an idea that had been banging around in the back of my head for a very long time. I’m not at all a science fiction guy—unless, of course, it’s that kind of VICTORIAN science fiction where guys tamper with forces they don’t understand and jump themselves into nowhere in a bubble-helmet diving suit made out of leather and heavy metal rivets. And, of course, you need a haunted polar bear.”
The 32-page Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time #1 is due out on October 22, 2025, from Dark Horse.
