A Gruesome, Existential Slasher “Replete with gory practical kills” Is Now on Hulu

in a violent nature

The horror genre is often seen as a great space for experimentation and unbridled creativity. Horror films are easier to make on the cheap because they don’t explicitly require big-name stars or flashy set design. Not only that, but the potential for profitability is high thanks to dedicated fans who will reliably turn out to watch genre fare.

Thanks to its status as a safer place to take risks, the horror space has produced plenty of noteworthy efforts from filmmakers who dare to be different and choose to think outside the box. For instance, the found footage subgenre was effectively born from horror space thanks to films like Cannibal Holocaust, which eventually opened the door for The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. These flicks create immersion by playing with perspective and putting the viewer in the heart of the action.

Yet another film that uses the genre space to branch out and play with matters of perspective is
writer-director Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature. The flick changes things up by presenting the bulk of the narrative from the perspective of the killer, rather than the POV of the victims. If the promise of something unusual has you keen to experience this one, you can presently watch In a Violent Nature on Hulu.

What is the setup for In a Violent Nature?

When a group of teens takes a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year-old crime. The undead killer soon embarks on a bloody rampage to retrieve the stolen locket, methodically slaughtering anyone who gets in his way.

Aside from changing up the POV, the film also stands out for largely eschewing character development in favor of grotesque displays of violence. That is surely an unorthodox move, but it worked to win over quite a few critics. Dread Central contributor Bill Bria is one of them. He reviewed the film for the site out of Sundance in 2024 and praised it as innovative, rating the flick 4.5 out of five stars.

Bria’s final summation of the picture reads: “In a Violent Nature is a consummate throwback slasher while being a clever meditation on fear and violence, replete with gory practical kills and an innovative pace and perspective.”

Now that you know our Bill Bria is a fan of the flick and that you can stream it on Hulu, perhaps now is an opportune time to see what you make of it.
