A Brutal Horror Film That “Makes vampires fun and nasty again” Is Now Streaming on Prime Video

Abigail

I am such a fan of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence. They have demonstrated a mastery of the anthology format as well as feature-length fare. The group first came on our radar via a segment in the 2012 horror anthology V/H/S, and they’ve been at it ever since. Following their arrival on the scene, the collective went on to helm the brilliant horror comedy Ready or Not and the celebrated slasher sequels Scream (2022) and Scream VI.

The group originally started as a foursome, but is now a twosome comprised of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Despite losing producers Chad Villella and Justin Martinez along the way, the collective has never ceased to impress.

Abigail, a more recent Radio Silence picture, recently made its way onto Prime Video, and that is more than enough reason to spend a moment championing this outlandish and undeniably gruesome effort.

What is Abigail about?

A group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a powerful underworld figure. Holding her for ransom in an isolated mansion, their plan starts to unravel when they discover their young captive is a blood-thirsty vampire.

I had a great time with this one. The horror and the comedy both land. My only real critique is that I wish the third act were a little tighter. Even still, this is one I look forward to revisiting again in the near future. With that said, I’m not the only fan of this flick within the Dread Central team. As it turns out, our Mary Beth McAndrews is also plenty taken with Abigail. In fact, she rated the film four-and-a-half stars out of five in her rave review.

Speaking of that critique, let’s take a quick look at why McAndrews was so impressed. Here is a small sampling of her coverage:

While much of the marketing betrays the first act reveal of Abigail’s true nature, Busick and Shields integrate plenty more twists and turns to keep the film fast-paced and interesting. Simply put, Abigail is a bloody good time that makes vampires fun and nasty again. It’s great to see that Radio Silence still has it even after being wrung through the Scream machine. A strong ensemble and razor-sharp script make this a major horror release worth celebrating. And don’t worry; heads will definitely roll.

If Abigail sounds like it might be up your alley, we suggest you head over to Prime Video to see what you’re missing.
