A “Gloriously Nasty and Sensual Spectacle” Is Streaming on Hulu; Don’t Miss It

Hellraiser 2022

We seem to have finally arrived at a point where studios understand that most fans (myself very much included) don’t want to watch a frame-for-frame remake of a beloved property that does nothing to justify its existence. We’re beginning to see more and more largely original takes on existing IPs that provide a sense of familiarity before carving out their own path. David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot walks that very line remarkably well. If you haven’t yet experienced his impressive take on the property, we urge you to seek it out via Hulu!

The 2022 redux tells a largely original story within the Hellraiser universe. The film additionally upends expectations by featuring a female Pinhead in Jamie Clayton. Clayton brings the character to life with an androgynous quality that recalls depictions of the beloved antagonist in The Hellbound Heart, the novella upon which the series is based.

In addition to a standout performance from Clayton, the flick also features strong writing, beautiful visuals, and atmosphere for days. Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews is a big fan of the update, so much so that she awarded the flick 4/5 stars in her rave review. The headline of her critique touts the film as: “A Gloriously Nasty and Sensual Spectacle.”

Her coverage reads in part: “David Bruckner’s take on Hellraiser is a glorious return to the sensual franchise. While not as transgressive as the original film, Bruckner, Collins, and Piotrowski still capture the dreadful, charged atmosphere in a bottle made out of human flesh. They bring the pain, they bring the pleasure, and they bring us a terrifyingly exciting vision of the high Hell priestess herself. I simply cannot wait for what other sights this team may have to show us.”

Plot crunch provided via Google Movies: A young woman must confront the sadistic, supernatural forces behind an enigmatic puzzle box responsible for her brother’s disappearance.

Well, that about wraps it up. Hellraiser is a remake done right, a film that captures the essence of the source material but ultimately strikes out on its own. If knowing that we here at Dread Central are huge fans of the flick has your curiosity piqued, make your way over to Hulu to see what you think.

Make sure to stay tuned to the site in the near future for more recommendations from the streaming space. Until then, we hope you will continue to keep it spooky.
