The Best Zombie Movie of the Century Is Now Streaming Free — Just as Its Sequel Hits Theaters

The film frequently credited with putting fast zombies in the pop culture consciousness is dominating the streaming scene ahead of the impending release of a long-gestured sequel. Of course, we’re talking about 28 Days Later. The flick currently holds the honorable distinction of claiming the #1 chart position on the Pluto platform in the U.S.
The very idea that the film is available to stream at all is a victory in and of itself. Due to a complex chain of custody as it pertains to ownership rights, 28 Days Later was long unavailable to watch or buy online or even to purchase on physical media (aside from on the secondary market).
Thankfully, with the much-anticipated sequel 28 Years Later finally gearing up to play theaters June 20, the beloved original film in the series is once again available to stream, rent, or buy online. Here’s hoping that a Stateside physical media re-release is planned for the near future.

It’s no secret that 28 Days Later is an early example of elevated horror. The flick released before that term was popular, but this picture has many of the qualities associated with that label. The film delivers social commentary, serves up standout showings from a capable cast, and offers a hefty helping of atmospheric tension. Seeing as Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) directed the flick, it’s no surprise that this picture resonates in such a profound way.
Boyle helms from a script by Alex Garland, who would eventually go on to write the chilling admonition about the dangers of AI, Ex Machina. As fans likely know, the dynamic duo recently re-teamed for the upcoming 28 Years Later.
In case you’re in need of a refresher, 28 Days Later plays out like this:
A group of misguided animal rights activists frees a caged chimp infected with the “Rage” virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.
That is just about all that we’ve got for you, for the time being. Stay tuned to the site in the very near future for more updates from the streaming scene.
