It was just about a year ago that we shared with you guys a press release that had all of us here at Dread Central checking the calendar and making sure it wasn’t April 1st as the news was simply too bizarre to ever possibly be true…
The totally unexpected press release stated that Arnold Schwarzenegger was in talks to star in a remake of The Toxic Avenger, going on to say that he’d be playing a character known as “The Exterminator,” a former black ops agent who trains Toxie to use his powers for good.
Though we’ve heard very little about the remake in the past year, Troma’s lovable figurehead Lloyd Kaufman has since stated that Arnie backed out of the project, and director Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) subsequently confirmed that he was no longer interested.
But let’s not count The Governator out just yet…
In a video interview posted over on Total Film this week, Arnold offered up some brief comments about The Toxic Avenger, which leads us to believe that he still may possibly team up with Toxie in the future. “I cannot talk about this project,” he said, “since it has not been totally approved.”
While this is far from confirmation of Schwarzenegger’s involvement in the impending reboot, his comments certainly seem to indicate that he’s possibly going to appear in it, as it’s likely he would’ve just come out and said he wasn’t involved if that were the case. But who knows? Perhaps he’s just messing with all of our heads, which wouldn’t really surprise us.
