Andrew Fleming’s witchy teen classic is a brilliant blend of ‘90s teen angst, steeped in the counterculture of the time, and mixed with empowering themes for outsiders of all genders. Would you believe that such a profound film just so happens to be available to stream? Better yet, it’s free to watch online via Tubi, and there’s no membership necessary!

I spoke to the film’s ample merits previously via my tenure at Dread Central, weighing in on how the flick serves as an evergreen reminder that individuality isn’t a bad thing. You can see an excerpt from my previous assessment of the unmissable thriller below.

“[The Craft] delivers strong messages of female empowerment and champions individuality. But for me, it has always been a reminder that it’s ok not to fit in. And that is a message that still resonates to this day. I’ve often felt like an outsider in one way or another. And the characters in the film lean into that notion, instead of running from it”

The film wasn’t as well-received by critics in its time as it ought to have been; in fact, the film currently sits at an unsavory critical approval rating of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. With that said, there’s more to a film than the critical consensus. Moreover, this critic thinks highly of the film, as do countless outsiders who grew up feeling less alone thanks to the picture’s themes of self-acceptance and individuality.

The Craft

The setup for this free-to-watch online cinematic touchstone goes as follows:

After transferring to a Los Angeles high school, Sarah (Robin Tunney) finds that her telekinetic gift appeals to a group of three wannabe witches, who happen to be seeking a fourth member for their rituals. Bonnie (Neve Campbell), Rochelle (Rachel True), and Nancy (Fairuza Balk), like Sarah herself, all have troubled backgrounds, which combined with their nascent powers lead to dangerous consequences. When a minor spell causes a fellow student to lose her hair, the girls grow power-mad.

There you have it, dear reader. If you have a couple of hours to kill and want to experience a dynamic feature that will simultaneously chill and empower, look no further than The Craft. And if you’d like to stream The Craft for free, look no further than Tubi. It’s free to watch online at your own pace. Until it disappears, that is…
