‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ Trailer: New ‘Predator’ Animated Film Is Coming to Hulu

Who doesn’t love an R-rated cartoon? The juxtaposition of animation and ultra-violence has long been a sweet spot for me, probably because it feels slightly taboo to pair the two. After all, cartoons are primarily targeted at youngsters and typically eschew graphic content in favor of more wholesome fare. So, when films like the upcoming Predator: Killer of Killers use the medium to tell gritty, unrestrained tales of epic bloodshed, I am quick to hop on board. If you’re keen to assess whether you’ll be hopping on board alongside me, might I suggest that you start by scoping the newly released trailer and one sheet below?
Hulu is pitching the flick as an “animated action-adventure film set in the Predator universe.” That suggests to me that this will be an entry that may reference past characters and events from the franchise. Furthering that assessment, Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the universally celebrated Prey co-directs this upcoming effort. Joshua Wassung takes the other directorial credit on the project. This marks Wassung’s feature film directorial debut, his prior background is in special effects.
My sole negative critique of the trailer is that I wish the animation style was a little more classic looking, rather than like something you’d expect to see in a PS5 game. When I read the plot crunch, I was anticipating renderings in the vein of Heavy Metal or The Spine of Night. I go crazy for that hand-drawn look. However, I’m pleased to see that Killer of Killers does make use of the rotoscoping animation technique that gives both of the previously mentioned films an immersive and realistic quality.

With that said, my qualms largely come down to personal preference and have very little to do with the overall quality. I’m just a much bigger fan of the more retro style. However, the content itself looks plenty compelling. Less than halfway through the trailer, we see a character’s head sliced in half, with brain matter flying everywhere. Hooray for that.
Plot crunch via Hulu: A Viking raider, a ninja in feudal Japan, and a World War II pilot encounter a fierce intergalactic hunter.
