‘Soul Reaper’ Trailer: New Indonesian Horror Merges Real World With Dream Realm

For me, one of the best parts of being a movie lover is discovering films that haven’t built a massive audience. There’s something undeniably exhilarating about unearthing a diamond in the rough. Speaking of a diamond in the rough, I suspect that the upcoming horror film Soul Reaper (Respati) will resonate in its native Indonesia. But I doubt it will break out on the same level Stateside. Even the most effective international efforts filmed in a language other than English seem to be a hard sell for American audiences.
With that said, the Soul Reaper trailer shows a certain promise, and I’m looking forward to checking the film out in its entirety soon. If you’re game to scope the trailer, we have you covered. The newly released preview (which debuted as a Bloody Disgusting exclusive) is available for you to scope in the player below!
The setup for this harrowing supernatural horror film goes like this:
Nightmares of violent deaths torment Respati—until he realizes they’re not just dreams. As the horrifying visions start manifesting in reality, he scrambles to stop the next tragedies before they happen. With his friends by his side, Respati delves into the dark mystery behind his cursed dreams, uncovering a sinister force at play.
Watch the official trailer:
Sidharta Tata assumed directorial duties on the project, which is adapted from a novel by Ragiel JP. In addition to helming, Tata also co-wrote the screenplay with Ambaridzki Ramadhantyo.
The film was released last year in its native Indonesia and has also played a handful of festivals at this juncture. U.S. viewers won’t have to wait much longer to experience Soul Reaper, though. The film is slated for a June 17 release on Digital. Bloody Disgusting additionally reports that the flick is slated to bow on Amazon the same day. The e-commerce retailer will reportedly be the film’s exclusive Blu-ray and DVD distributor.
In his review of the film from Panic Fest 2025, Dread Central’s Matt Konopka said,
Respati wears its influences on its sleeves, sure, but the combination of inspirations results in something a little more unique than your average Nightmare copycat. Though it loses track of what’s working at times with clutter that stalls the pacing, Tata no doubt delivers a frightening vision that oozes striking imagery that’ll keep you up at night.
Devano Danendra, Mikha Hernan, Keisya Levronka, Budi Ros, Fajar Nugra, and Ratu Felisha topline the upcoming horror thriller.
Now that you’ve seen the trailer for Soul Reaper, what do you think? Will you be checking the film out when it makes its U.S. premiere next month? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
