Are You Brave Enough to Check Out “The scariest movie of the decade”?

Chime

Scary means a lot of things to different people. Last year’s Oddity was Dread Central’s favorite horror movie of the year, a “pitch-perfect ghost story” whose “traditional, throwback [scares] will have you yelping, jumping from your seat, covering your eyes because you’re too afraid to see what happens next.” Oddity was a critical hit, though there were still some audience members who didn’t see what all the fuss was about. What scares someone is going to be innately different for everyone.

Still, that doesn’t stop horror fans like me from singing the virtues of whatever it is that really sticks with us. You know that one movie that absolutely wrecked your soul, scared you more than any other, so much so that you just want everyone to experience what you did? I’ve been trying to get everyone to watch Horror in the High Desert, is all I’m saying. Recently, one Twitter user went viral for sharing their pick for the scariest movie of the decade, and it’s as unconventional a choice as they come. Real ones will know, though, and if you’re curious, allow me to recommend Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Chime.

Per IMDB: A school teacher is woken by a sound that fills him with dread.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa, known for such genre masterpieces as Cure and Pulse, is no stranger to generation-defining terror. Chime might be brief, clocking in at just under 45 minutes, but it’s undoubtedly one of the best horror movies of the century. After all, it ranked on my 2024 Best Of list, where I wrote, “Chime spirals into pretty nasty territory. It’s existential, haunting, gory, and regularly a marvel. To see Kurosawa back at the top of his game is nothing short of a privilege, and Chime, despite its short length, is liable to haunt you more than most anything else you see this year.”

One Twitter user even contends Chime to be the scariest movie of the decade, and I don’t think they’re that far off. Mileage will certainly vary, but if you’re locked into Chime’s wavelength, it’ll absolutely scare the living hell out of you.

The challenge, of course, is getting access to Chime. In order to view the film (legally), you’ll need to access Roadstead.io, a digital video trading site, create an account, and then rent another user’s copy of the movie. Odd, but absolutely worth it. And if you do seek out the sounds of Chime, definitely let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
