The Best Horror Film of 2022 Is Now Streaming For Free

Barbarian

The last 15 years have been a really profound time period for the horror genre. In that space, we have seen the release of more quality horror films than I have the time to list here. The success of titles like It Follows and The Babadook (among other thought-provoking horror films of similar vintage) paved the way for more talented filmmakers keen to tell compelling stories in the genre space to do just that. Seeing as both of the aforementioned films were made for an estimated budget of less than $5 million, we’ve subsequently seen even more genre titles in that price range get greenlit. One shining example is Zach Cregger’s 2022 horror film, Barbarian.

Barbarian is the best horror film of 2022 for many, myself included. This admittedly unorthodox outing cost an estimated $4.5 million to make, but returned ten times that at the global box office, winning over both fans and critics almost immediately. That’s a resounding success by almost any measure.

The setup for this celebrated effort goes as follows: A young woman discovers the rental home she booked is already occupied by a stranger. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

Similar to trailblazing efforts like Hereditary and Get Out before it, Barbarian manages to deftly meld horror tropes with subtext and heavy thematic elements. Barbarian may not be as metaphorical in its messaging as some of its contemporaries, but the themes here are a little more obvious. But the film does an exceptional job providing relevant commentary on the destructive nature of trauma, the problems inherent to a society built on male privilege, and so much more. Perhaps even more importantly, Barbarian is entertaining as hell and wildly unpredictable.

Where Is Barbarian Available to Stream?

If all this talk about Barbarian has you keen to revisit the flick, we’ve got you covered. As it turns out, this delightfully unhinged picture is available to stream on Tubi as of the publication of this post.

Alright, there you have it, dear reader. Barbarian, the best horror film of 2022 according to this critic, is now available to stream for free (with ads) on Tubi. Three cheers for that.

Stay tuned to Dread Central for more updates regarding which horror films are available to stream and where to find them. If you’d like to keep up with my comings and goings until then, you can find me ranting about movies and my menagerie of pets over on Threads as @FunWithHorror.
