The Number 1 Most Watched Movie on Netflix is a Brutal Clint Eastwood Thriller

Bradley Cooper in the Clint Eastwood movie American Sniper.

Netflix just added the Clint Eastwood war thriller American Sniper to their lineup yesterday and that’s all the time the flick needed to make its mark on the streamer. The Bradley Cooper-led picture is already the most-watched film on the service just one day after its addition.

In the film:

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Cooper) takes his sole mission—protect his comrades—to heart and becomes one of the most lethal snipers in American history. His pinpoint accuracy not only saves countless lives but also makes him a prime target of insurgents. Despite grave danger and his struggle to be a good husband and father to his family back in the States, Kyle serves four tours of duty in Iraq. However, when he finally returns home, he finds that he cannot leave the war behind.

It probably shouldn’t come as any great surprise that American Sniper is resonating with Netflix subscribers. The flick also made a massive dent at the box office during its 2014 theatrical exhibition. The picture brought in a global total of $547.1 million on an estimated budget of $58 million.

With numbers like that, it’s hard to believe that Eastwood wasn’t actually Warner Bros.’ first choice to direct the project. As it turns out, Steven Spielberg was initially courted to helm the screen adaptation of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s life. However, Spielberg ultimately walked away from the project, citing budgetary constraints as the reason for his departure. The Play Misty for Me director eventually replaced Spielberg on the project.

The flick picked up six Oscar nominations, taking home one statuette for Best Achievement in Sound Editing.

Jason Hall (Gran Turismo) penned the script for Eastwood. Hall adapted the project from Kyle’s memoir which he wrote with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice.

Aside from Cooper in the lead role, the feature also stars Sienna Miller, Luke Grimes, Jake McDorman, and Cory Hardrict.
