Does This ‘Kill Bill: Volume 2’ Easter Egg Connect the Movie to ‘Django Unchained’?

Kill Bill: Volume 2

I recently critiqued the respective Blu-ray releases of both volumes of Kill Bill for Dread Central. In my rewatch of Volume 2, I pondered an element to which I hadn’t previously given a whole lot of thought. The name on the headstone of the grave where Budd buries The Bride is Paula Schultz (pictured below). Ms. Schultz lived from 1823-1898.

I hadn’t previously thought much of it. However, there is something to the name on that tombstone. I did some Internet sleuthing and found a couple of interesting tidbits.

First and foremost, the name Paula Schultz is clearly a nod to the 1968 film The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz. However, that’s not necessarily where the story ends. Many fans have posited that the headstone may belong to the wife of Dr. King Schultz from Django Unchained.

Paula Schultz

In case you’re unfamiliar with the character, Dr. King Schultz worked as a dentist before trying his hand as a bounty hunter. Eventually, Dr. Schultz helps liberate the titular character in exchange for assistance tracking down the Brittle brothers.

Django Unchained is set in Texas. The cemetery scene in Kill Bill: Volume 2 also unfolds in the Lone Star State. The prevailing fan theory is that Paula is Dr. Schultz’s wife. Some have also speculated that she may have been his sister. Either way, the shared surname, location of the grave, and the years lived suggest a connection between the films.

Tarantino is all about detail. So, you know he probably did that to see if anyone was paying attention. If you’re curious to see for yourself, you can stream Kill Bill: Volume 2 on Philo as of the publication of this post.

The setup for Django Unchained is this:

Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave, finds himself accompanying an unorthodox German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) on a mission to capture the vicious Brittle brothers. Their mission successful, Schultz frees Django, and together they hunt the South’s most-wanted criminals.

The premise for Kill Bill: Volume 2 goes as follows:

The Bride (Uma Thurman) picks up where she left off in volume one with her quest to finish the hit list she has composed of all of the people who have wronged her, including ex-boyfriend Bill (David Carradine).
