This Underrated Series Produced by James Wan Is Now Streaming for Free!
Sometimes good things weren’t meant to last. Case in point: Gary Dauberman (who co-wrote the 2017 remake of It ) and Mark Verheiden (writer of the ‘90s sci-fi spectacle Timecop) created a series based on the Swamp Thing comics for DC Universe (the now defunct DC streaming platform). The show boasted master of modern horror James Wan as a producer. And it featured a killer cast of characters. Yet, shortly after the program debuted on the platform, the suits at Warner Brothers inexplicably pulled the plug.
If what I’ve said so far has you bummed, just wait. It gets even worse. The show eschewed CGI in favor of a man in a suit (Derek Mears) playing the titular character. Not to mention, the program leans into the horror roots of the comic, giving it a decidedly dark aesthetic.
Aside from Derek Mears as the titular character, the show’s impressive cast includes Crystal Reed, Virginia Madsen, Andy Bean, Will Patton, Jennifer Beals, and Kevin Durand. Oh, and did I mention Adrienne Barbeau (star of the Wes Craven Swamp Thing film) appears on the program as a guest star?
The show was originally slated to run 13 episodes, but Warner cut the series order down to 10 and canceled the program shortly after the first episode dropped on DC Universe. The CW eventually picked up the broadcast rights and aired the series as part of their lineup in 2020.
Where can I stream Swamp Thing?
It’s heartbreaking that a series with such promise was canceled before it even had a chance to succeed. However, the silver lining in this rain cloud is that the program is now available to watch on Tubi in its entirety.
If you’re somehow still on the fence, allow me to mention that the show is 92% ‘fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes and fans that have actually seen the program have nothing but love for it. There was even a viewer-driven campaign to save the series from cancellation.
The setup for this James Wan-produced series goes like this:
Abby Arcane returns home to Marais, Louisiana, to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, where she develops a bond with disgraced scientist Alec Holland. After Holland tragically dies, Abby discovers the mysteries of the swamp and that Holland may not be dead after all when a mysterious creature claims to be him.
