James Wan started his Hollywood journey with horror. He came onto the scene with Saw and followed the massive success of that film with Insidious and The Conjuring. Although Wan took breaks from horror to helm a Fast and Furious sequel and two Aquaman features, fright films have always been close to his heart.

When Wan made the press rounds for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, he chatted with Total Film. The Dead Silence director spoke with the outlet about his influences for the DC sequel and revealed which horror movie inspired his vision.

Wan named the Mario Bava sci-fi horror film Planet of the Vampires as a major influence on his second Aquaman picture and reassured fans that he will always be a horror fan. “Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires,” Wan told the outlet. “You can take the boy out of horror but you can never take the horror out the boy.”

James Wan isn’t the only noteworthy director who has taken influence from Planet of the Vampires. Countless film scholars have suggested the Bava picture was a major influence on the aesthetic and storyline of Ridley Scott’s Alien. And if you watch both films back to back, I think you’ll see why.

Planet of the Vampires was fairly well-received by critics upon release. Many saw past the film’s minuscule budget and connected with the atmosphere, visuals, and cinematography.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the setup, Planet of the Vampires plays out like this: An astronaut (Barry Sullivan) and his partner (Norma Bengell) flee from reanimated corpses on a volcanic planet.
